In the years to , a popular North of Ireland Championships tournament was held in Cliftonville, but it was cancelled after The tournament did not take place in the mainly war years of , but resumed at the Belfast Boat Club in early June of The Ulster Hard Court Championships tournament was held for the first time in It also became very popular but did not supersede the original Ulster Championships tournament, which was held on grass and, in order to distinguish it from the hard court tournament, often referred to as the Ulster Grass Court Championships.
The quality of the entries was generally higher at the Ulster Grass Court Championships. Various types of annual tennis championships are still held at the Belfast Boat Club today.
